They don't pack sodas with lunches and ignore the tray of birthday cupcakes.

As fashion trends change and we accumulate more essential electronics, the list of things banned from schools keeps evolving. All public schools in Berks County ban things such as tobacco, alcohol, drugs and weapons. Other rules, such as dress codes and electronics policies, vary from school to school.

A look at school handbooks shows a most-wanted list for students: clothing that's too tight, revealing or baggy; sugary snacks; games like pogs and playing cards; and an increasing array of hand-held technology.

Dress codes

School administrators and school boards consider a few questions when deciding what's allowed in the classroom.

Exeter High School principal Marc P. Bellettiere asks: "Is it conducive to the learning environment?" and "Is someone's attire so distracting that people can't learn?"

Schools also have to change rules to keep up with trends.

"Fashion styles have become more and more bizarre and more and more revealing," Bellettiere said.

Exeter's most-recent dress code said shorts and skirts should be fingertip length, but some arms can be very long or short, Bellettiere said. Some students were wearing short shorts and miniskirts that were too short.

Last year, the high school made several changes to help students learn how to act and dress in the world outside school. All skirts and shorts now must be at least knee-length or mid-thighlength with opaque tights or leggings.

Dressing modestly for school should help students learn how to dress for a job interview or for work, Bellettiere said.

As styles change and time passes, student dress codes have grown longer, Schuylkill Valley High School principal David J. Haughney said.

"As dress has gotten more casual, they have to have more basic guidelines," he said.

Also, in the past, students and parents assumed what's OK to wear to school. Now the rules have to be spelled out, he said.

Fifteen years ago, students with nose piercings or lip rings may have been told to take out their body jewelry. Now,Tiffany Note, piercings are more common and not really an issue, said Oley Valley Middle School principal Daniel Marks.

"It's not a problem, but it will come out for gym class," he said.

At the middle school, students have to take off all jewelry, including piercings, during phys ed class.

"You don't want to have a nose piercing and get hit in the head with a gym ball," he said.

School rules also extend beyond clothing.

Oley Valley Middle School, like many area schools, doesn't allow students to carry backpacks between classes.

"We often have to play worst-case scenario," Marks said.

Weapons and drugs could be hidden in backpacks.

Electronics

Most schools in Berks County don't allow students to use cell phones or music players at school. Usually, they can be stored in lockers, but not turned on until school is over.

Cell phones distract students from class, Haughney said. Plus, smart phones can access the Internet and could be used to cheat on a test.

In the past, students at Conrad Weiser High School weren't allowed to even bring cell phones into the building, said high school principal Dr. Betsy Adams.

She thinks that rule would be ludicrous today. Students need cell phones to contact parents and to arrange afterschool plans.

At Conrad Weiser, cell phones must be turned off during the school day.

Twin Valley High School has one of the few exceptions to the school cell phone use ban. This year, students at Twin Valley High School can use cell phones throughout the school day.

The school made the move because cell phones are important to teens. It's normal and expected to be in constant contact with friends and parents,cheap tiffany, said principal Dr. Kate Long.
